What is FiveM, and why was it created?

FiveM is a multiplayer modification platform for Grand Theft Auto V that lets communities operate their own dedicated servers, game modes and rules.

GTA Online is Rockstar's official online world. FiveM offers a different model: an independent server can introduce jobs, housing, vehicles, custom interiors, interfaces and even entirely new styles of gameplay. Its flexibility comes from the resources that server owners install and develop.

FiveM timeline: From an independent project to Rockstar

FiveM did not become a mainstream roleplay platform overnight. It grew through community experimentation, controversial early years, technical development and eventually a formal relationship with the company behind GTA V.

2014

CitizenFX foundations

Early technical work provided the basis for what later became the FiveM platform.

2015

Dispute and account suspensions

Rockstar confirmed action against people associated with the FiveM project. The dispute over an unofficial multiplayer service received widespread coverage.

2017 onward

Community code and development

More code, documentation, tools and community resources became publicly accessible, allowing a growing developer ecosystem to emerge.

2022

Policy clarification

Rockstar published a policy framework for roleplay servers, subject to restrictions on monetization and intellectual property.

August 2023

Cfx.re joins Rockstar

The Cfx.re team announced that it had joined Rockstar Games; subsequent statements clarified that this was an acquisition.

2024 and beyond

A much larger creator ecosystem

FiveM remained a major foundation for customized multiplayer and roleplay communities.

Historical details should be checked against the original Rockstar and Cfx.re announcements, as well as contemporary reporting from 2015.

Who created FiveM? What nationalities were the developers?

Contemporary reporting identified NTAuthority as a key creator or early developer of FiveM. Over time, the platform became a team project developed by multiple contributors in the Cfx.re community. Treating one person as the sole author of every modern FiveM component would be inaccurate.

Name or groupRole supported by the cited recordNationality

What was the dispute between FiveM and Rockstar?

The central controversy in 2015 concerned a GTA V multiplayer service operating outside GTA Online. Rockstar described FiveM as an unauthorized alternative service and raised concerns about its code and terms of service. The developers, by contrast, emphasized independent community servers and customized multiplayer experiences.

Developers' perspective

Community-run servers and creative multiplayer experiences distinct from the official GTA Online environment.

Rockstar confirmed suspending accounts belonging to people involved with the project in August 2015. A separate November report described claims by developers that private investigators acting for Take-Two had visited them. Those later allegations were reported claims, not an independent confirmation of every alleged detail.

Important distinction: Reports about suspensions of individuals in 2015 do not establish that every FiveM player was routinely banned.

The relationship changed substantially in subsequent years: policy guidance appeared in 2022, the Cfx.re team joined Rockstar in August 2023, and a later official FAQ clarified the acquisition.

Why did FiveM become central to roleplay servers?

Its appeal is not one single feature. Dedicated servers, an extensible scripting environment and the ability to customize nearly every part of the player experience work together. Communities can build police and medical roleplay, racing, survival systems, serious economies or custom game modes.

In its 2024 anniversary communication, Cfx.re reported that FiveM surpassed 300,000 concurrent players in 2023. It also reported more than 20 million unique users across FiveM and RedM combined up to that point. Those are separate metrics; the combined figure should not be presented as a FiveM-only player count.

ESX, QBCore, Standalone and Customized servers

Two different questions matter when describing a FiveM server: Which core framework does it depend on? And how extensively has that core been changed? Standalone and Customized are not simply competing framework brands.

Framework-based

Built around a core such as ESX, QBCore, Qbox or vRP, relying on its APIs for players, jobs and economy.

Standalone / custom core

The team implements its own core systems without depending on a major RP framework. Independent libraries may still be used.

Customized ESX

Originally built on ESX, with heavily rewritten inventory, UI, jobs and other systems. It is still ESX-based while its core dependency remains.

Customized standalone

An original core that has accumulated proprietary features and deeper modifications over time.

The matrix compares architectural categories and degree of customization; it is not a survey of market share.

Some Iranian servers describe their setup as a “custom base,” even though it originated from ESX. That can be an accurate description of extensive customization—but it is not proof that ESX dependencies have been removed.

A practical clue: resources named es_extended or calls such as exports['es_extended']:getSharedObject() suggest an ESX foundation. Confirm by inspecting dependencies, APIs and database schema.

Standalone generally means independence from a specific RP core, not necessarily that every single supporting script was invented in-house.

Is FiveM open source?

A substantial amount of FiveM and FXServer source code is publicly visible on GitHub, but a public repository does not automatically grant unrestricted rights to reproduce, redistribute or sell every part of the software.

AreaWhat to verify
FiveM sourceThe repository is publicly accessible for inspection.
Main repository licenseUsage is subject to the Rockstar Games Creator Platform License Agreement.
Specified subdirectoriesCertain portions have GNU LGPL v2 licensing according to the repository LICENSE file.
Server scriptsIndividual resources may be open source, freeware, commercial, escrow-protected or proprietary.

The precise statement is: “FiveM has publicly available source code, but rights and restrictions depend on the license of the specific component.” Read the license ↗

FiveM and Rockstar today

Cfx.re has been part of Rockstar Games since 2023. Nevertheless, running a FiveM server is not a blanket license to use third-party trademarks, music, vehicle brands or assets from unrelated games.

Joining Rockstar also does not mean that custom servers have merged into GTA Online, or that every server's content is officially endorsed. Platform rules, intellectual-property rights and monetization policies still apply.

In short: FiveM evolved from an independent community project into part of the Rockstar ecosystem while preserving the essential idea of customized multiplayer worlds.

Before investing in a server or selling services, review the latest platform rules and the licensing conditions relevant to your project.

Frequently asked questions

Is FiveM itself GTA V?

No. It is a platform for customized multiplayer built on GTA V. Players must meet the platform requirements for a legitimate copy of the game.

Does a Standalone server mean not a single third-party script was used?

No. It generally means the project does not depend on one of the familiar RP core frameworks. Libraries and independent resources may still be present.

If an ESX server is heavily rewritten, what should it be called?

“Customized ESX” is usually more accurate unless the ESX core dependency has genuinely been removed.

Does Rockstar now own FiveM?

Yes. Cfx.re formally confirmed the acquisition in its 2023 communication.

Why FiveM grew: Finding a server in your own language

One of FiveM’s greatest attractions is the ability to choose a community by language, culture and play style. Persian-speaking players can find a community where conversation and server rules are in Persian, join their friends and enjoy jobs and roleplay stories without needing to communicate constantly in English.

Not every server focuses on roleplay. Communities may offer realistic city life, police and emergency jobs, racing, drifting or free roam, while customizing vehicles, maps, economies and events. Finding a welcoming community and shared language is a powerful reason players return.

Notable international servers: NoPixel and other RP communities

NoPixel is among the best-known GTA RP communities, thanks to long-running character stories and broad exposure through Twitch and YouTube streamers. TwitchRP and New Day RP are other names frequently mentioned in the GTA roleplay community; availability, application requirements and server rules change over time.

Famous does not necessarily mean best for you: consider the spoken language, activity hours, whitelist rules and RP style. Also, not every GTA RP server runs on FiveM; some operate on other multiplayer platforms. Background on popular GTA RP servers

The 2020 free GTA V giveaway on Epic Games Store

Rockstar offered GTA V: Premium Edition for free on Epic Games Store from May 14 to May 21, 2020. People who claimed it in time could keep it permanently. Removing the purchase barrier introduced many new users to GTA V and its multiplayer possibilities.

Contemporary reporting documented a huge rise in demand for Epic’s store and Rockstar services. A wider GTA V audience could then discover custom roleplay communities such as FiveM, but there is no reliable standalone figure for how many FiveM users were added specifically by the giveaway. Early Iranian roleplay communities and the ESX era

Community recollections of early Persian-language FiveM roleplay often mention Iran Role Play, IRPixel and Sunrise RP as pioneering names. A significant part of that early generation used ESX-based or heavily customized ESX systems for jobs, inventory and in-game economies, while server teams continued to develop their own resources.

Independent primary archives are insufficient to rank these three as the first servers, assign exact founding dates or verify every project’s original framework. This is therefore presented as community history, not a verified chronological ranking. The name Iran Role Play also appears in other GTA multiplayer communities, including SA-MP, so the histories should not be conflated. FiveM framework documentation

Iranian access restrictions and the emergence of VMP

Iranian players reported IP-based access restrictions affecting some Cfx.re and FiveM services, including the server listing and connection process. Posts in the official Cfx.re community in March 2024 described blocked Iranian IP ranges and linked the issue to sanctions. This does not establish that every FiveM server universally banned every Iranian player. Cfx.re discussion

VMP emerged as a multiplayer GTA V platform focused on Iranian users. It is not the official FiveM service; feature and resource compatibility must be checked separately. Visit VMP official website or browse the VMP server list.
